PREAMBLE:
Dear Managers,
Thank you for joining the Millennium League. I have been in a couple of Dynasty Leagues before and have not always been happy with the leagues I have been in. I am sure you have been there --- players dropping out, teams on auto-pilot, people not showing up for games. The Millennium League seeks to be different. The folks at Dynasty have created an amazingly creative and intricate game. And I’m sure anyone who has signed up for a Dynasty League has wished for a league that is as good as the game itself.
However, this is not so easy to achieve. For one thing, we are all basically anonymous to one another. We are in different parts of the country and it is easy to be inconsiderate to someone you don’t know, have never seen and will never meet. Still, I know that we all want to have a great league where everyone cares, shows up and does not quit. We are all in this together. If a few people start to not care and not show up, soon everyone loses interest and the excitement dies.
This is play, it’s fake, it is not real life. I get that. We all have real lives. Wives, daughters, sons, work, parents and obligations. I certainly would not expect people to stop living their lives just to play Dynasty in their basements.
So what do we mean by a more reliable league? Well, here is a list…
1. Play all Dynasty Online rules wherever not altered below. No score-keeping or stats recording required
2. The League is a continuous ownership non salary league, starting with the 2000 season. Each season will begin as soon as possible after Dynasty Online allows.
3. The Annual draft pool will consist of all 30 teams.
4. The draft order will be in reverse order of previous season’s standings. Teams will be allowed to protect no more than 20 players entering the draft. For a player to be protected or be in the draft, he must be on the roster of one the teams in the draft pool. For the first season, draft order will be determined by lot.
5. 20 players may be protected by a manager at the end of a season for the next season. All others go back into the draftable player pool.
6. If a manager drops out of the league and a replacement manager is not found, that manager’s MLB team is no longer in the draft pool. Players from that MLB team currently owned continue to be eligible to play in the league. All players from that manager’s team become free agents and are eligible to be drafted.
7. Stadiums, cities, team names, logos and colors may not be traded or changed.
8. The annual draft will last until all managers pass, keeping in mind the roster limit is 30 players.
9. Roster size is 30 players.
10. Schedule to be 162 games.
11. There will be two series’ scheduled per week. Weekend series will be scheduled to be played at 9pm Eastern Time on Sunday. Weekday series will be scheduled to be played at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday.
12. Please see preamble as well as this section. If one or both managers wish to reschedule and a mutually-acceptable reschedule time cannot be agreed upon, the manager(s) unable to play as scheduled must place their team on Auto-Pilot. If a manager does not show up for their series and does not send an email or text to explain their absence, the opposing manager may play the game vs. the computer, NO QUESTIONS ASKED…
13. A player may be traded or placed on waivers prior to or after any series, and a new player drafted. Trades do not have to be equal in numbers. Future draft choices may be involved in trades. The commissioner must be notified as soon as possible and will then execute the player moves. All trades must be confirmed to the commissioner by both players before the trade is official.
14. The trade deadline for our league is July 31 (in the game, not in real life). After that only waiver/pick up moves can be made. This rule serves the same purpose as in MLB: To limit the number of unbalanced trades. The commissioner has veto power for all trades. The commissioner may ask managers to state in writing their reasoning for a trade if asked.
14A. Clarification on the vetoing of trades (following the infamous Ryan Klesko trade of June, 2014. Poor judgment on the part of an owner is generally NOT a reason for the vetoing of a trade. In most cases, trades will only be vetoed by the commissioner if they are deemed as being somehow underhanded or fraudulent or if there is some sort of faulty miscommunication --- or if there is suspicion that one of the players is not attempting to do the best they can, in their own judgment, for their team. Vetoes will be generally be rare. Please take great caution whenever making a trade!
14B. When a trade is made, players switch rosters as soon as possible. This means that a team "behind in time" compared to the team they traded with may need to play short-handed for a series. The players will be removed from their team's roster as soon as a trade is made and the commissioner can accomplish this. Dynasty may delay a player joining a new team if he is already "ahead in time" in this season from playing on his previous team.
15. For the 2000 season, no DH will be used in any park. This issue will be revisited and voted upon prior to the 2001 season. I understand that this is a divisive baseball issue. Please understand that it is the kind of issue that is sure to leave some players unhappy. Please respect a democratic process in this case.
16. Playoff teams are as follows:Each of the 6 division winners are in the playoffs. After that, two wildcards in each league play a play-in game. 10 teams make the playoffs, but only 8 play after the play-in game.
17.After the play-in games, in the first round of playoffs, in each conference the better win percentage between A. and B. plays D . and the other plays C., with A. & B. having home field advantage.
18. In the LCS the two winners in each conference meet in a best of 7 series.
19. In the World Series the team with the best win percentage will have home field advantage. Each series is a 7 game series in the playoffs except for the play-in game.
20. If there is a tie in determining playoff qualifiers, the tie will be broken by a three-game playoff, with home field advantage in the first and third games determined by the better head-to-head record. If that is a tie, a dice roll will determine home field advantage.
21. If there is a tie in determining playoff opponents for A. & B., the tie will be broken by head-to-head record, or a dice roll if head-to-head is tied.
22. At the end of each season the league will vote on various honors including MVP, All-Star Team, Cy Young and the coveted Manager of the Year Award.

So what do we mean by a more reliable league? Well, here is a list…
- Autopilot. I am sure that sometimes during a 162 game season, everyone is going to need to use Autopilot on occasion. Things come up and Dynasty takes a back seat. Everyone understands that. But try to keep it at a minimum. Rescheduling can be a big help. If you are out of town for 5 days, see if you can schedule one series before you leave and one for when you return. Still, no one is going to begrudge you if you use the autopilot from time to time. But try to use it with caution. It’s simply not as fun to play against a computer.
- Rebuilding Year. Personally I understand as well that in a keeper league, there are going to be “rebuilding” years…You may be in a transition season and your team sucks while you are waiting for your players to mature, I think most owners will understand you might use the autopilot while your team is 30-72 or something. No one likes to lose, lose and lose again. To me, what is important is you stay active. That means looking to make trades, keeping an eye on the waiver wire and staying with the league when it returns the next season.
- Showing Up. One of the most frustrating parts of a league is when you carve out a couple hours to play Dynasty in your busy schedule and then your opponent does not show up. Now you have to carve out a few hours the next night. I have to admit that I did this myself last year. I completely forgot the game and looked up at 11:30 and “OMG I forgot about Dynasty.” I stood up my opponent, who incidentally was very nice about it. However, in this league if you don’t show up, the opposing manager is allowed to play the computer. Unless you have written earlier in the week to try to reschedule. If you wrote nothing and just forgot about it, your opposing manager has the right to play, no questions asked. No one has the right to be annoyed, upset, pissed off or anything else if they don’t show up and their opponent plays the computer.
- Don’t quit on us. Above all, try to stay in the league. It really sucks when managers quit and teams change hands. Continuity among teams is important to maintain a competitive and fun league. I know life gets busy sometimes. Use the Auto if you must, but try to stay with us.
- Don’t be a Poor Sport. We’ve all been taught this since we were toddlers. But sometimes when playing with strangers it is easier to “take your ball and go home.” If your team sucks, don’t quit. Stay with us. If you don’t like a decision of the Commissioner, say your piece but stay with us. The league will only succeed if everyone tries their best to be a good sport.
- The Unwritten Rules. The last thing that tends to cause friction in a league are the so-called unwritten rules of baseball. In Dynasty, that usually means taking an extra base, stealing and so on with a big lead. I don’t buy the unwritten rules. Last year I was up 11-3 and had a game well in hand and I stopped taking extra bases. You know what happened. Yup, lost 13-11. No lead is safe. Try not to begrudge owners who continue to play hard just because they have a large lead
